Dark clouds rolled lazily across the night sky, hovering above the glowing moon. A blue-haired girl stepped from the shadows, walking until she reached a large tree, and hauled herself up onto one of the lower branches. She draped herself across the limb, staring up at the purple sky, stars twinkling. A meteor soared across the pallet of royal purple, and she smiled wistfully.

“I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight,” she whispered childishly, remembering the times she used to have with her mother.

“Mom, why do we wish on balls of gas and debris?”

An older woman gave an amused laugh, “It’s more of the principle of the thing, love?”

The small child propped herself up on her elbows, “What principle?”

“Well, people wanted a way to hope for the impossible. Seeing something like a star falling from the sky was just one of the ways they chose to dream when there was no hope.”

The girl huffed, “But they’re wishing on
trash, mom. That’s what debris is.”

The mother sighed, wondering when her daughter had grown up so much, seemingly skipping over her childhood and the simple joys of not being tied down to reality. “It’s still something that most people accept. Like a tradition.”

The small girl nodded her head sagely; she could accept tradition.

"I wish–" she hesitated, before speaking softly, "That I could find someone to love me, for just being me."
